  3. Imagine being in a horrifying, abandoned, ancient amusement park on full moon night. Closed for the Season by Mary Downing Hahn is a spine tingling story for people who like a spooky abstruse mystery. Seventh grade Logan Forbes thinks his dad will buy a good house and that he will get to have a fresh start, but he doesn’t know the worst of it. A murder was committed in that house! This novel is an amazing spooky page turner but sometimes you might not want to turn the page!
Logan sees his new house and almost faints. The house is old, and run-down, with paint peeling and flaking. When Logan meets his new neighbor, Arthur Jenkins, he tells him something that almost makes Logan run away from his new house. He tells Logan that a murder was committed in his new house! Now Logan wants to know everything about the murder and why it was committed. One day Logan and Arthur gather all the information and find out that the money that the murderers were looking for was hidden in the Magic Forest. They can only come up with one solution, which is to sneak out at night and go to the Magic Forest before the money falls into the wrong hands. Now it is a race to get to the money first.
Mary Downing Hahn has succeeded in writing a scary page turner that will make you have nightmares. The book is filled with details that help you imagine the whole book in your head like a phenomenal movie. This mystery is a great suspenseful book because you won’t know who is going to live and who is going to die until you read all 182 pages.Something I liked about Closed for the Season that many books don’t do is that it gets amazingly interesting right from the first chapter so you won’t ever be bored while reading. Things happen so fast in this book that you won’t want to ever stop reading.Closed for the Season by Mary Downing Hahn is a great entertaining book that contains a whole lot of excitement throughout the story. But don’t forget . . . only read in the daylight so you don’t get too scared.

  4. I have recently completed reading a beautiful piece of realistic fiction called The Other Family by Joanna Trollope. This book was not exactly style, but it is undoubtedly well written. I felt as if I could not relate to it enough because I could picture myself in the situation. However, since the writing and plot were both brilliant, I would recommend it to my peers. For those interested in reading this book, I have provided a glimpse at the plot. The plot revolves around the death of Richie Rossiter, a famous musician, and his two separate families. His first family includes his wife Margaret and his son Scott. He left them around twenty-three years ago and has been with his second family ever since. He has failed to keep in touch with them and solely focuses on his second family, which consists of his much younger wife Chrissie, and their three daughters, Tamsin, Dilly, and Amy. Each of these families is well aware of the other's existence, however they have never met. This all changes after Richie dies. The major problem in the story is that Richie has not divorced Margaret, nor married Chrissie. At first they think they will be able to avoid one another, but it becomes quite inevitable as the plot unravels. How will the collision of these two families' lives come into play? Well, find out for yourself!

  6. For this project I read Band of Brothers by Stephen E. Ambrose. I feel this might be the best book I have read! The book follows the legendary group of soldiers during world war two, Easy Company, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne. The book takes you into the lives of the men. Since the book is non-fiction and the auther interviewed many of the men prior to writing it, much of the book is made up of undeniable facts. The book begins with the mens rigorous training and their war with their hated commanding officer Captain Herbert Sobel. Next you follow Easy Company through the European Campaign of World War two. Through this the reader expierences some of the horrors, and believe it or not beuties, of war. The reader becomes emotionally attached to the men. For example, while I was reading the book, one day I was on the computer and I saw an article saying that Major Dick Winters, the hero of the book in many ways, died just a few weeks ago, now usually when a complete stranger dies you feel some sorrow for them and there loved ones but, after reading this book, i felt like I knew Dick. I give great credit to the auther who did such a great job in writing this book and really did the men of Easy Company a great justice. Therfore if you are looking for a book that will take you deep into the lives of World War Two soldiers or a book that, through reading, you gain a deep emotional connection to the characters, Band of Brothers is the book for you.

  7. I have just read the book Tangerine by Edward Bloor for my IRP. I highly recommend it because it is unique in many ways, like the story being told from the perspective of a legally blind main character, and having some sci-fi and mystery themes throughout the book even thought it is a realistic fiction novel.

Tangerine also has a unique story line. In Part One of the book, Paul Fisher has to adjust to a new life and school in Florida after a long move from Texas. Paul makes some friends and enemies, and learns about his town and its inhabitants. In Part Two, after a strange event, Paul transfers to Tangerine Middle, where the school soccer team, the War Eagles, becomes his life. Paul also finds some soccer-loving friends and discovers their work as tangerine farmers. In Part Three, Paul tries to unravel the truth about the forgotten event that made him blind, and gets involved in a murder mystery of a friend's older brother.

I think people who like to read soccer novels, mysteries, and personal stories will enjoy this book the most. I would rate this book four out of four stars.

  8. I read the book Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson. For all the girl who feel lost or want something to connect with, even if it's not as extreme as the book, you will feel different after you read this book. Lia and her friend Cassie made a pack to be the skinniest girls in the school. With both of them so determined they'll do anything to be skinny. But BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR. There's always a downside to a perfect plan, in this case, eating disorders. Lia is stuck between a real, living life and a dead, empty person. When her bestfriend Cassie passes away it just makes everything much more complicating.
If your not looking for a different, moving book with a lot of description and harsh details then I would stay away from this book. But if you can take all these disturbing, real life situations, and like a happy ending then this is a great book for you.
Take the journey with Lia as she realizes that she is amazing the way she is. Do you ever doubt that you will never be good enough? Have you ever realized that once you get something you cant help yourslef but want more? Well read on, you will look at people in a different way.

  9. I, Robot, a classic science fiction novel written by the brilliant science fiction writer Isaac Asimov, is made up of a series of short stories, connected by the protagonist, an elderly robot psychologist, called Susan Calvin. Dr. Calvin tells the stories of her life from when robots were mute, clumsy, and used for purely manual labor, to when they possessed the most powerful weapon against humanity, the economy. These stories are all based on three laws of robotics, created to protect humans when robots become more intelligent than their own creators. These laws are pushed to the limit in nine extraordinarily well written chapters. Overall, I would strongly recommend this book for its captivating series of short stories.

  10. Have you ever felt lost? Or that you didn't really know who you were anymore? Waking up in the morning ashamed of who your family is? Well main character, Heidi, feels the exact same way.

I recommend the book So. B It by Sarah Weeks because it really made you feel like you were grabbed in the book and can deal with everything that Heidi goes through. 13 year old, Heidi It, lives with her mom who has a mental disorder and her neighbor, Bernadette who they met when Heidi was born. Heidi doesn't know her past and is intrigued to know when she finds old photos in a drawer in her apartment. And whats on them? Her grandmother that she didn't even know she had! Well she finally discovers that her past all started in Liberty, New York. Traveling alone on a bus from Nevada to New York might not be that fun and may be a little tricky, but Heidi can't wait! Heidi meets some interesting people on the bus to Liberty, goes to the same mental hospital as her mother and grandmother were in, lives with a couple named Roy and Ruby who invite her into their home while she stays in Liberty. And she is on the hunt for a four letter word that must mean something to Heidi's mama- SOOF.

I don't want to give anything away but in the end, she finds out EVERYTHING! And maybe just a little too much for her ears. If you like adventures and a surprising twist, then you will defiantly love the book So B. It. This book was very well written and really captured every detail in the novel. Once you read this book you will feel compassion for what Heidi deals with and realize that something’s you just can't just know in life. Heidi is a true role model for most girls and doesn't need anyone’s help. And why is the title called So b. It? Thats what i wondered and you will have to find out if you read the book! 11. What would happen if President Obama disappeared out of office one day, and a poor man off the streets of New York City replaced him? If you have ever wondered what would happen if the destitute suddenly held a scepter, or even if you haven’t given it a thought, I urge you to read the classic novel The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain. In fourteenth century London, two boys are born on the same day. One is the son of a penniless family, named Tom Canty. The other is of regal descent, who commands the official title of Edward Tudor, Prince of Wales. These boys have nothing in common. As Edward is clothed in regal apparel and adored by the country, Tom Canty is beaten by his abusive father and thrown into the streets in rags, forced to beg for his dinner. One day, after being maltreated by his father, Tom wanders far away from his home. He does not watch where he is going, and stumbles upon the home of Edward, although he doesn’t know it. Tom, who hungers to see a prince, meets Prince Edward himself and goes inside with him, where Tom learns that Edward is sick of his life as a caged prince. The two boys switch clothes to see how each other look, and can’t help but notice that they are identical. When Edward suddenly sees that one of the royal guards has slapped Tom, he runs away with vengeance in his head. Tom is left in the royal home dressed as a prince, while Edward is carted away by a merciless crowd as a mere pauper. These two boys are both believed mad by all who they try and relate the truth to, and are forced into learning that the other half of London is not what they believed. To unearth whether Edward survives his travels with beggars, thieves, and deranged archangels, and if Tom can keep England from falling to wild disrepair, you should head straight for your nearest Barnes and Nobles and pick up a copy.
I personally liked this book because of Mark Twain’s writing style. He uses quotes to describe scenes from London in the 1500’s, which helps the reader visualize what is happening. In addition, his ideas are so original and so unlike anything modern writers give us that there is no possible way to compare him to other literature. Any reader who enjoys unique stories is sure to gulp down this tale immediately.

  12. I read "Skinned" by Robin Wasserman. It was a an amazing book about basically finding yourself and who you are no mader what you are. This book takes place in the future. It is about a teenage girl named Lia Kahn who gets into a horrible car crash. Her injuries were to bad to live with so her parents desided that the doctors would replace her body with a mechine,a skinner. She is no longer a mortal. The will never age and will never die. If something happens to her new body, it can be replaced or they can just fix her up. She does not breath, she can not feel a lot of anything, and she can not cry. Once she is awake, and can blink, she goes into rehab and starts to learn how to walk, move, and talk. She would go to her socail worker, which by the way she hated. While she is still at the hospital, she meets another new skinner named Quinn.

When she finally goes home after many weeks spent in the hospital, lots of people who still belive in God, "Faithers", are protesting her homecoming. When she gets to school everything is messed up. She used to be the most popular girl in school. She was beautiful and had a great boyfriend, Walker. But her friends were not Zo's friends (Zo is her sister) and she will later find out after she meets the only person that understands her,Auden, that her boyfriend is Zo's boy friend. The only person that she has to go to is Auden.

One night she gets a text that told her to go to an address. she did and she found that the place was crawling with skinners, or like they like to be called, mechs. She meets Jude, one of the first skinners and he says that they are trying to embrace the fact of being a mech. Lia does not like being a skinner because she had a great life before the accident and it got messed up. They Jump off waterfalls to feel the rush. lia did not and Auden didnt let her.

Her sister does not believe that she is her sister. She thinks that Lia is dead and she is a replacement. She says that it was all her falt because she was that one that should have been in the car crash anyway.

Liagoes back to the waterfall one day and jumps off the edge. She wen into the water and Auden thought that she was drowning so he jumped into the freezing water to save her. she cannot drown. he gets to cold and gets pulled under the water and Lia goes down the save him. They get to that hospital and Auden cant become a skinner, can't feel anything below his neck and is very badly injured. he blames it all on Lia.

In the end Lia starts to accept what she is and has become. She moves to were the other mechs stay and starts over. She realizes that she is a diffrent person then she was before and is happy with it.

  16. Wingardium Leviosa! For all those wild fanatics of this renowned wizard out there, you are bound to indulge in reminiscence of the tale I shall immensely praise. A particular fictious character, developed thoroughly, has been acknowledged numerous times around the world, as he travels on broomsticks, conducts spells, and battles enormous trolls. Personally, I have only just begun to read of this young boy’s journey, and I remain as one of the few who hasn’t heard of his heroic history. He is always wrapped in black robes, has a wand in his pocket, and has befriended a dragon. This adolescent I speak of lives by the name of Harry Potter, student of Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft and child who grew up with a lightning shaped scar on his forehead.

Harry Potter has gone on multiple adventures, his first involving an object titled the Sorcerer’s Stone. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was chockfull of suspense, and pulled me further into the story as the chapters and time flew by. J. K. Rowling’s plot stands out as original and unique. She develops the setting with intense sensory language, allowing me to believe I am physically present standing right next to Harry. This fantasy novel introduces you to a world full of magic, mystery, and frisson. I believe that anything so sensational and phenomenal should absolutely be shared with anybody and everybody, even if you dislike fantasy. Therefore, don’t forget that you should never judge a book by its cover!

Mr. Potter, age eleven, was once put in the hands of his horrid aunt and uncle. One ordinary, cloudy day many years later, as the years have dreadfully gone by, peculiar events begin occurring. On his way to work, Uncle Vernon notices cats reading street signs and has been hearing of owls flying during the daytime! Finally, curious as I was, Harry and I both discover his true, untold past, present, and soon to be future. He manages to escape from the awful Dursleys to Hogwarts where he meets two, new faithful companions. Along with these two special findings at his school, Harry stumbles upon a severe situation as well. While wandering the halls of Hogwarts past sleeping hours, the team of three unexpectedly encounters a three-headed dog that guards a secret beneath a trap door. Naturally, it’s crucial to discover what lies beneath. Exactly what is it, why is this extremely important, and above all, who is after it?

  17. The truth about forever is that it is happening know. This is one of the many lessons that Macy learns in the book, The Truth about Forever by Sarah Dessen. This story is about Macy Queen who is expecting a very boring summer while her perfect boyfriend, Jason is away at brain camp. Macy isn’t very unfamiliar with being perfect either. Ever since her father died, Macy has always tried to be perfect in everything that she does. She even plans on spending the summer studying for the SAT and working at the library. That is until Jason puts their relationship on hold and Macy takes a catering job with the fun but chaotic people at Wish catering. At Wish, she meets many people including Delia, Kristy, Monica, Bert, and Wes and becomes friend with each of them. In particular, she builds a strong friendship with Wes who teaches Macy how to tell the truth. Throughout the summer, Macy learns many lessons for herself as well, including how it’s impossible to be perfect and how sometimes the best things in life aren’t planned, they just happened. She also learns how to except the death of her father and realizes that it is okay to grieve. I thought this was an excellent book full of realistic emotions and a very interesting plot. I would recommend this book to someone looking for a story full of feeling that is very easy to relate to. Read this book to see how Macy copes with various problems and transforms into a completely different person in the end!

  18. Broken heart, love, death, and friendship are just a few of the themes that the reader will encounter while reading the story The Last Song. The author, Nicholas Sparks, keeps you one the edge of your seat, with your hands griping the book tightly anxious to read on.
Ronnie is a 17 year old girl who has to go with her younger brother Jonah to live with her father for the summer, in North Carolina. She is a rebellious teen who despises her father for abandoning the family, when he and Ronnie’s mother divorced. In addition, Ronnie recents playing the piano, since it was a passion that both she and her father used to share.
Once in North Carolina, she falls in love with a boy named Will and her outlook on life changes. She and her father become close. She gets along with her brother, and becomes overall a happy person. Jonah and her father work on a stain glass window for their church that had burned down. Then the summer comes to an end and Will has to leave for college at Vanderbilt and Ronnie goes back to New York. While she is gone her father is diagnosed with cancer. However, he doesn’t want Ronnie nor Jonah to know. Summer comes again and this time Ronnie is excited to spend time with her father, and see Will again. Unfortunately, her father’s sickness gets worse and one night he starts to throw up blood. So Ronnie and Jonah take him to the hospital where they find out their father is sick and his condition is terminal. He doesn’t have much time left. Frustrated Ronnie does not want to listen to Will try to comfort her and breaks up with him. Jonah finishes the stain glass window, while his dad is in the hospital.
At the end of the summer, Ronnie decides she is not going to go back to New York, but stays with her father to comfort him until the end. In the last few months she has with her father she starts to play piano again. When Jonah says goodbye to his father for the last time he listens while his dad tells him that every time he looks in a window and light shines through, that is him watching over Jonah. Several months later Ronnie watched her father pass away. At the end of the funeral, through the stain glass window Jonah made- a light shined, and Ronnie knew it was her father. When Ronnie gets home she gets into Juilliard and there she gets a call from Will who says that he is transferring to Columbia University, in Manhattan, so they can be together for the rest of their lives.

  21. This book is odd. Big Fish: A novel of Mythic Proportions. The title even gives away a bit of its bizarre ambience. A different perspective on Giants, a two-headed Japanese woman from Nagoya, and much more is to be found in this novel. However, the man who lived through this is now on his death bed with such terminal cancer that you can blatantly call it, 'dead.' This man is Edward Bloom and has lived the life we all would want to live. William Bloom (son/narrator) however, doesn't truly believe this majestic tales of his dad and undertakes the challenge of finding his father's 'true roots' as he feels that his father hasn't been around that much for him. The book is written in a chronological (although they may not appear so at first) series of tall tales. Despite the novel's first-person narration, there is no present tense part of the book. The various stories are a retelling of tales that Edward has told about his life. This book was wonderful, and very quirky so if you do enjoy a little fun with a little sadness and a little in between, then Big Fish is the book for you!

  23. Are you looking for a book filled with drama and suspense? If so, I would recommend reading "Bloody Jack" by L.A. Meyer. I would give this book four stars because I could relate to the main character in many ways. In addition, L.A. Meyer uses a unique writing style that displays the illiteracy of the main character. The book centers around the adventures of Mary "Jacky" Faber, a young orphan girl growing up in the poor conditions of the street life during the late eighteenth century to the early nineteenth century. As a child, her parents and her younger sister, Penny died of disease. While a corpse seller collects the carcasses of Mary's family, she runs away. The orphan is soon recruited into a gang led by well-known gang leader, Rooster Charlie. Mary spends the remainder of her childhood with this gang trying survive by begging and stealing. One day, Charlie angers the same corpse seller that collected the carcasses of Mary's parents, Muck. Later that day, Mary finds Charlie dead among a large amount of cobblestone. As a result, she cuts her hair and takes Charlie's clothes. Mary changes her name to Jacky so she is recognized as a boy. She leaves the gang because of the murder Charlie. Later, Jacky is among the ship boys chosen to go on the ship, the HMS Dolphin. Along with Jacky, five other boys are chosen to go on the ship. Life begins to become more difficult for Jacky tries to conceal her gender. Read the rest of the book to discover the shocking events that complete this glorious book. "Bloody Jack" reminds me of Mulan because Mulan tries to hide her gender to fight in the army. I would recommend this book to young adults looking for an entertaining series that will keep the reader at the edge of their seat.

  24. Recently I read a book by Wendy Mass called A Mango Shaped Space. It was recommended by a family friend so I decided to give it a try. I have to admit I was slightly bored in the beginning but then it really took off and I couldn’t put it down! Mia, a 13 year old 8th grader has seen colors all of her life whenever she heard sounds or saw words/letters. I loved how Wendy Mass wrote Mia’s character so that I, as a 13 year old 8th grader, could relate almost perfectly. I wonder if she has a daughter. Anyway, she starts to struggle with algebra because an x being a certain color can’t stand for a number of a different color. She also has trouble in Spanish because two words that mean the same thing could be different colors. I know, I’m just as confused as you must be, but that also puts an emphasis on how no one really understands her. Eventually she has to tell her parents and they take her to a neurologist where she finds out she has a condition called synesthesia. One can only imagine how relieved she must feel to know she’s not alone. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that she has a little cat named Mango (due to the mango colored puffs that appear when he wheezes) who was very sick when they found him. She and Mango are very close and he seems to be the only one she can talk to about her synesthesia. Through her struggles in life, it seems the only way she can find who she really is, is when she loses a huge part of her life. This was one of the most enjoyable novels I have read in a while. I hope you all find it to be the same, enjoy!

  25. This book was not as entertaining as Avi’s previous books. The plot had the main character, a street-smart boy named Fabrizio, running around trying to solve the mystery of who framed his beloved master, Mangus the Magician, and himself. The story manages to blend the history of medieval times and the wizardry that is associated with it and seamlessly into a fast-moving plot that builds to an unexpected and satisfying ending. Murder at Midnight is Avi’s 70th book, and his masterful touch with characters shines through. From the plucky Fabrizio, to the cranky Mangus, to the brave sidekick Fabrizio finds in a jail, Maria, to Agrippa, the witty and oddly appealing executioner, the characters and their dialogue are a joy. This book is an excellent read if your looking for a fun mystery set with fantasy and unexpected surprises.

  27. “Pictures in the Dark” by Patricia McCord, although told through the eyes of young girls, also possesses thematic elements and symbolism of a mature adult novel. Carlie and Sarah, the main characters of the realistic fiction plot, taken place in 1954, which live under their mentally ill mother’s abuse and unrealistic boundaries, such as not being able to eat, sleep, bathe, or use a phone without her permission. The sisters’ lives become unbearable, and when the unexpected happens, they must face the inevitable truth- they must tell someone, or else the life they have known and hid all these years will crumble.
I thought this book had the ideal balance of moments of laughter, joy, fear, and sorrow. This novel would be a favorite to those with a liking of heart-pacing suspense, but also a favorite to those who love a tearfully happy conclusion.

  28. Baseball: The true American sport. But to some people Baseball isn’t just a passion; it’s a way of life. Take for example young Nicholas “Nicky” Palmeiri, a youth in 1970’s Connecticut whose cleft chin makes him the outcast at his school. But baseball isn’t his only obsession. He is also an avid lire. Usually Nicky’s lies are minute and have no real effect on anyone. But when Nicky loses his prized mitt, he sets up strings of lies until he is completely entangled in them.
The book is decently written and demonstrates the importance of a good character. Lou Petrucci is usually very brief in this book, which can be good, but ultimately leads to this book’s primary downfall. There is very little substance in the chapters and there are FAR too many of them. Another aspect about this book is that most characters in this book are static, while only two at most are dynamic. But this book does serve its purpose as a sports story about truth telling and the vitality of a strong character and also is exceptional at portraying suburban life in the northeast during its time period. Overall, I would give this book 2 and a half stars out of 4. It is a must read for baseball enthusiasts and readers who enjoy a look into the mind of their main character. Will Nicky keep spinning more lies? Or will his subconscious break the ever increasing web of lies? You will just have to read this book to find all this out and more

  29. Want to read a mystery and not miss out on a good realistic fiction book?

Although almost robbed, some become skeptical that the robber wasn't the only criminal there. can she solve the crimes and say the magnificent pieces of art? I give this book an 8 out of 10. This is a must read book for anyone able to follow a complicated and multievented storyline. This book was amazingly able to tell the story of agirls day to day life while thet solve the crime in between. the book was clear and sent out a strong message that all will understand. want to know the message? then read Sammy Keyes and The Art of Deception.

  30. I would recommend the book "Witch & Wizard: The Gift" by James Patterson to anybody who likes fantasy and can read books written in the present tense. This book was not exceptional, but I still enjoyed it. It is set in a parallel dimension to Earth set slightly in the future. It is not supposed to be a parallel dimension, but it seems similar to Earth. However, it is controlled by an evil overlord who calls his empire, The New Order. The book is about Whit and Wisty Allgood, the main characters, trying to destroy this overlord and free the world. They try to free captured children and free themselves when they are captured. The plot of this story is one of the worst plots I have ever read a book about. The plot can be written in two lines(above). However, the characters are very well developed. In the novel, magic exists. I don't like the fact that this book is similar to many other books in that the world is ruled by an evil overlord and other elements. However, I can still recommend this novel to a few people.

In conclusion, Witch & Wizard: The Gift is aboriginal and written in the present tense. It is largely inferior to many other of James Patterson's creations, but it is still a page turner.

For my IRP project, I read Hero, by Mike Lupica. This fantasy book has an element of mystery and surprise. In this book, fourteen-year-old Zach Harriman’s father dies in a mysterious plane crash. As for any teenager, the loss of Zach’s father creates a more difficult life. Zach suspects someone caused his father’s death. Therefore, Zach journeys to the crash site. At the crash site, he meets a strange man, Mr. Herbert. Zach finds out that he has magical abilities. Zach begins to encounter men with evil intentions. Most of the time Zach’s enhanced senses and improved instincts help him physically beat his enemy. However, to confuse Zach even more, he questions who to trust, his family lawyer Uncle John or Mr. Herbert. Then, Zach senses that something bad is going to happen in New York City at a presidential campaign speech. Who will Zach trust? Can Zach prevent this predicted bad event from occurring? Who really was Zach’s dad? These questions are all answered in this book. Since the main character Zach is a teenager, it is easier to connect with how he feels. I would definitely suggest this book to everyone. By the way, even though the main character is a boy, this book is also interesting for girls. So if you are looking for an action packed, thrilling, entertaining book, Hero is the book for you!

  37. So Punk Rock (and other ways to disappoint your mother) by Micol Ostow is a great and funny book. The book follows the main character Ari Abrahamson and his dream to become a rock star. Ari decides to form a band. For his band he enlists his best friend Jonas, the weird overly religious kid Yossi (only because he owns drums) and Yossi's sister Reena. Ari though must face many challenges in his quest for rock stardom. These problems consist of the fact that his parents are obsessive about his grades and his getting into Brandeis (a Jewish college where many kids from his school go), the fact that his friend Jonas is becoming more and more of a jerk, and a crush on a girl who likes his best friend. His band, The Tribe, becomes widely popular within his school despite these challenges. This prose/graphic novel is great for people who love funny stories and music.

  38. Boot Camp by Todd Strasser is realistic fiction based on fact, in an effort to educate about a secret, private prison system that runs in the US, and around the world. The story follows Garrett as he is taken to a secret facility in the middle of nowhere. We learn about the prison in which Garrett is detained, “Lake Harmony”. Anyone under the age of 18 can be sent to Lake Harmony by their parents, with a waiver that eliminates any constitutional or human rights. The goal of these facilities is to send a once delinquent child back to his or her parents as a docile son or daughter, by whatever means necessary. The book follows Garrett’s brainwashing, and torture when he fails to change his beliefs. A the end of the book, there is an afterword which give information on the reality of these secret prisons, or “Boot Camps”, which says that the concept of Lake Harmony in use throughout the country. I finished this book the day I took it out from the library. Then, after deciding on this book for my I.R.P, I read it again. I would highly recommend reading it.

  41. Have you ever wondered if there was a heaven or hell, or maybe someplace in between? Well for thousands of souls there is that middle ground, and it is called Everlost. Everlost is a strange and magical place, full of secrets and mystical powers. Everlost is the place where dead children go when they “haven’t made it to where they are going yet”. In other words they are stuck there until they find a way to get out of Everlost and complete their journey to heaven (or hell). However, when many powerful and determined souls compete for leader there, it causes an all out war.
Everwild is the second book of the Skinjacker trilogy by Neal Shusterman, and in this novel all of the main characters finally come together and compete for the top spot and attempt at annihilate the other competition. There are two teams in this war. The first is lead by Nick the Chocolate Ogre, and it consists of Allie the outcast, Mikey McGill, Johnnie O., Zin the ripper and Nick’s army of afterlights. He is competing against his true love, Mary Hightower, and her ensemble Milos, Jackin’ Jill and Mary’s army of afterlights. Both Nick and Mary are expanding South and West to gain more followers. Who will triumph over the other and will be successfully named the ruler of Everlost? Read this novel to find the answers to these questions and more.
I enjoyed this book deeply because of its suspenseful cliffhangers that leave me craving more. It was also a well developed plot and written with so many details that turned out to be extremely important later on in the story. If you enjoy action and Science fiction, than this is a book worth reading. I would recommend this book to teens of all ages, because of the connection felt between the reader and the characters. The Skinjacker trilogy is definitely one of my favorite series, and I hope that everyone that reads this blog post will chose the novel Everwild to curl up with and agree with me.

  42. Have you or anyone you know suffered from amnesia? Well the girl in "Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac" by Gabrielle Zevin knows how it feels. Her name is Naomi, she was adopted from Russia when she was a baby. One day Naomi was with her bestfriend Will, and they forgot a camera for the yearbook club in the school. They flipped a coin to see who would have to go get it, and Naomi picked heads and she lost. On her way back from retrieving the camera Naomi fell down the stairs and got a serious head injury. Her head injury caused her to not remember anything in her life from the past four years. This loss of memory causes Naomi to lose friends and make friends, and she becomes a very different person. I really loved this book and I could relate to it a lot. At times I couldn't even put the book down, and I stayed up way too late reading it.I would recommend the novel to mostly girls. It was really great and I hope you read it!

  43. Have you ever been in a situation of friends dying all around you? This is something many of us have never experienced and hope it never does. He meets another horse of equal strength and power named Topthorn and they experience things that no horse should. Joey and Topthorn meet some friendsalong the way, but lose many. They are in a struggle for their lives in the topsy turvy World War I. "War Horse" is absolutly the best book I have ever read and probably will read. This book is as enlighting to make you smile, but sorrowful enough to make you cry. I recomend this book to anyone interested in the wars. Also, this is a great read for those that love thrillers and sorrowful books.

  44. Have you ever seen something that you never thought was possible? Well, in Michael Scott’s novel, “The Alchemyst”, the protagonists, Sophie and Josh do. They witness a fight between two sorcerers, the infamous Dr. John Dee and the legendary Nicholas Flamel. From that instant, they knew that their lives would never be the same again. They were sucked into the dangerous and mystifying magical world and it will take time for them to realize that the world they have known for so long was not the true Earth. There have been powerful creatures called Elders that were worshipped as gods in the ancient times and coexist with the humans. With the help of Nicholas, Sophie and Josh must seek out friendly Elders in order to learn elemental magic and stand up to Dee. All the legends they have heard are suddenly true, and to make matters worse, the Dark Elders (Dee’s allies) have control of the book that has the power to shape the world but they are missing two critical pages… the ones held by Sophie and Josh.
This book was exciting, suspenseful, and well written. The author always ends each chapter with a cliffhanger that forces you to keep on reading. I also thought it was interesting that Nicholas Flamel was a real person and was rumored to be a magician. I could not put this book down! After reading this book, I have continued to read the six book series. I enjoyed this book and would give it a five out of five and recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy novels.

  45. Have you ever wanted to travel to the top of the world without all the hard work and climbing? If the answer is yes then read “Peak” by Roland Smith. The story is about a 14 year old boy named Peak who loves climbing. There’s only one problem, he lives in New York City, (not a very good place for climbing). In fact the only places he can climb are skyscrapers, which isn’t exactly legal.
All this changes when a S.W.A.T. team shows up on a building that he was climbing. He ends up facing 3 years in jail. Right when he thinks all hope is lost his dad shows up. This is the first time Peak has seen his dad in 7 years. His dad offers to take him with him to Nepal where he runs a climbing operation. The judge says yes and Peak is off to the other side of the world. Once he gets there his dad tells him that he is going to climb Mt. Everest.
On Peak’s journey to climb the majestic mountain he has encounters with many people including natives, other climbers, and the Chinese military. Will Peak make it to the top or will he join the many that have perished attempting this beautiful yet horrific climb? There’s only one way to find out.
I thought this book was amazing and would recommend it to anyone who loves a book with lots of twists and turns. The author included a lot of suspense and action which kept me on the edge of my seat. Overall, I loved this book.

  46. Crispin the Cross of Lead, by Avi was a very interesting story to read. This book is a historical fiction novel that is centered on the time period of the fourteenth century. It shows in many different perspectives how people lived their lives during the Middle Ages. As the plot unraveled, I learned about many different lifestyles.
The story line and plot was based on the life f a boy named Crispin. In the story, Crispin is a thirteen year old boy and is a peasant living in the village of Stromford. He is quickly met with devastation when the story begins with the death of his mother. As he continues to toil through life, he learns that he is declared a “Wolf’s Head” by the steward of the village, John Aycliffe. A “Wolf’s Head” means that anyone who sees him can kill him. Crispin then decides to abandon his hometown and he journeys far away until he meets a man named Bear. Bear forces Crispin to become his servant but they soon become great friends. The plot centers on how Bear and Crispin journey to a city called Great Wexley where they find their ultimate challenge: John Aycliffe. Will Crispin finally stand up to this man or will he escape? I guess you have to read the book to find out.
Overall, I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy suspenseful and historical fiction type stories. This book would appeal to ages 13 and up because of the ability of Crispin to relate with the reader. Readers will find how effectively the author foreshadows what is to come in the beginning and how well the final scene is presented.
Based on Andre’s book review, I would recommend this book to him. In his novel, Among the Brave, he explained how the main character named Mark was constantly running away from the police and making new friends. In Crispin the Cross of Lead, Crispin is also forced to avoid John Aycliffe which keeps the reader on their toes constantly. Also, Crispin makes a new friend in the process named Bear.
I would also recommend this book to Cooper. In Cooper’s book, On the Run, the main character named Luke helps and aids a blind runner. In Crispin the Cross of Lead, Bear serves as Crispin’s main guide and helps him through hard times. If Cooper liked the friendly relationship between Luke and the runner, I think he would enjoy reading about Bear and Crispin.

  47. I recently read the great action- packed novel "The 39 Clues, Book 1: Maze of Bones" by author Rick Riordan; famous auther of the Percy Jackson series. This book is a mystery/action story about two orphans Dan and Amy Cahill owned by their sinister Aunt Beatrice who makes them live a normal life. Little do they know that their favorite grandmother grace is a part of the famous Cahill clan, comtaining some of the most famous people in history. When the grandmother passes on, in the will the members are encouraged to join the fierce scavenger hunt for the 39 clues which will make you the most powerful, and intellegent person in the world. Once again, little did they know that this scavenger hunt may be specially designed for them to win because they were so special to Grace Cahill. The children meet snobs along the way, some people helpful, and they gain so things they thought they would've never learned. Doesn't this sound excellent? It is and to find out more you'll have to read the amazing novel. It is very hard to put down, and that is why i give it 3 stars out of 4 stars. The writing is a bit bland where there needs to be some more "juicy" description. Thank you for reading this -B.W.

  50. Are you ready for a time of suspense, horror, and a view point that could even change the way you see the true luck of being alive? Well, I have the book for you. Time Windows by Kathryn Reiss is an amazing novel that really makes you think, and has your eyes glued to every page throughout the novel. I would obviously rate this book with 4 out of 4 stars, because of the authors' fantastic way of relating to our generation while focusing on many topics that slip our mind everyday.
In the story, a 13-year-old girl named Miranda Browne moves to a new house in Garnet, Washington because of her mother's occupation. As soon as she gets there, she is struck by an eerie feeling, as if something in the house's atmosphere wasn't right.
Miranda begins to explore the house when she finds an old dollhouse in her attic. She notices that it is an exact replica of her new house! Miranda spends some time with this dollhouse, but she soon comes to realize that this is no ordinary dollhouse. When Miranda looks into the dollhouse's windows, she is able to see scenes from different times in the house's history, and the two families that lived before her in this house. It scares Miranda exceedingly so when she first notices this, but over time, going up to the attic becomes a sort of addiction for Miranda to the point where it is almost beckoning her to climb up the stairs and sit for hours watching different events that had happened since the turn of the century.
As Miranda continues to watch the dollhouse scenes in the attic, she begins to notice that her family is starting to morph into the characteristics of the past families. Her mother, who is usually a very kind and gentle person, starts to become extremely aggresive, agitated and abusive, which were the exact characteristics of the previous mothers to live in this house. This continues to the point where the same scenes Miranda sees in the dollhouse repeat themselves in her own life!
Miranda feels obliged to keep the secret of the dollhouse to herself, and things progress thorughout the story to the point where Miranda has to make some life-altering decisions and rise up against her fears to ultimatley save the life and well being of another soul, that will grealy impact her life in ways she could never imagine.
So if you are ready to join Miranda in her adventure through terrors, sorrows and joys, pick up this miraculous novel soon!

  53. In the midst of a freezing world, most of the year covered in snow, sits a small village. In this village, there lives two sisters, Maura age 9 and Millie age 13, living a life that they love. But, when a plague strikes their little cluster of families, all they have ever known will be questioned. After much death kills off the village, they must leave their home, and venture out into the world, to save each other.
As I enjoy historical fiction, and find particular interest in Native American cultures, I found this book in the library excited to read a story about such. I was discouraged to find that actually, not many cultural touches are forefront, but more subtle and less obvious. Certainly you have to consider the fact that the group of people being talked about are Arctic Native Americans when considering certain aspects of the story. But, it is a touching story about two sisters finding out how much they love and depend on each other. The storyline is basic, but meaningful. It is a different look at things, as the girls are dealing with nature instead of other people as the villainous character. They both also transform internally, but you have to read the book to find out how! The last thing I will say about my personal opinion of the book is the ending is way too abrupt. I felt as though one minute, all was doom and gloom, the next, the world was perfect, all of the girls’ problems resolved. There was no falling action, and the resolution came much too quickly after the climax. But, overall it was fairly interesting.
I would recommend this book to those who have a great connection with their sister (as they will be able to relate to the characters’ feelings) and who enjoy history, and looking through a window into such a time.

  54. Have you ever read a book that you could just read over and over again? How about when a kid has to wear a weasel in his shirt all of the time? Well if you haven’t, the book Framed, by Gordon Korman should be a top pick. This book is the third one in the series. The other two stories are Swindle and Zoo Break. This is an action packed realistic fiction book. The reasons why I enjoyed Framed was because kids in eighth grade tried to do the unthinkable while trying to prove their innocence. It was also enjoyable because it takes place on Long Island.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read action or mystery stories. Also, if you like to read literature that has a lot of suspense, you will really like Framed. However if you don’t like unrealistic plots then this is probably not a book you should read. Before you read this book, I would recommend reading the first two in the series because all of the characters and settings are better explained in the other books.

  55. Do you watch detective shows? Do you like finding out who the killer is at the end? If you watch csi, ncis, the mentalist or any of those shows than this book is just right for you.

I strongly recomend the book Easy Access by R.K Holler. Jimmy and Frank's best friend Nancy dies a couple days before Jimmys birthday. But Nancy didn't just die, she was murdered. There were no finger prints, no mystery blood,no clues. Just a dead body and nothing else. Waldtrip and Micheal are the main detectives in this mystery novel. You would think all was going well in til detective Waldtrips ex-wife runs into a stone wall and dies right in front of him. As a result, police think he killed his wife so he is off Nancys case. So now its up to Micheal, Jimmmy, Wally and Vitale to figure out who this mystery killer is. As you read on more characters are introduced and they all tie together in the end of the story. More dead bodies are showing up and the detectives are slowly finding more and more clues to catch the killer.
If you want to have some sort of job in legal when you grow up, or if you just like watching dectective shows, the mystery and suspence in this novel will keep you turning the page over and over in til you reach the end and you wont belive what happens.

  56. I just recently read a book called, "Eye Contact" by Cammie McGovern. This book was extremely intereasting, although the beginning was a bit slow. It is about a young boy named Adam who is autistic. One day during recess he goes missing with a young girl. and hour or so later they find him and the girls body. Ever since the incident Adam has retreated to a silent world, whereas before that he would barely speak more than two or three sentances. The Detectives are relying on him as the only witness, but they are not even sure if he remembers/understands what even happened. This book was unique in its writing style because it switches to focusing on different people, and goes back into the past. At times it could be a bit challenging with the large amount of characters involved. I did greatly enjoy this book because it goes along with the mystery topic we are focusing on in class currently. i would reccomend this wonderful read to all.

  57. Annabel Greene looked like the perfect girl, the girl who had everything. She was a model, a popular, and had the perfect family. It all began to fall apart when her sister Whitney almost died from anorexia. Then, when Annabel's best friend Sophie accuses her of trying to sleep with her boyfriend, when he really tried to rape her, things change forever.

When Annabel returned to school the next year, everyone ignores her. She begins to eat lunch alone on the wall outside, with Owen, another outcast, sitting nearby. One day, when Sophie causes a nasty scene, Owen finally talks to Annabel and offers to take her home. They began a friendship and had deep conversations about music, which Owen is obsessed about.

Eventually, things start to get better for Annabel. She and Owen are a couple and Whitney is recovering. When one of her friends is almost raped by the same person, she is upset, and after seeing his band at a club, she runs off, leaving Owen wondering what happened to her. He is furious and they stop talking for months.

At home, however, things are improving. Whitney is almost completely recovered, and she reconnects with the sister that revealed her eating disorder. Annabel begins to become friends with her old best friend after a fight that took place years ago, and finally decides she needs to tell Owen why she left.

She finds him at the radio station where he does a show, and tells him what happened. He convinces her to testify in his upcoming trial. After testifying, things get much better for Annabel, and she is finally happy again. I strongly reccomend this book because it has basic and complex problems girls typically go through in teen years. I really enjoyed reading it, I hope you do too.

  58. The book I had the pleasure of reading was Sent by Margaret Peterson Haddix. In this exhilarating read the characters are sent to the fifteenth century. They are sent there because two of them were kidnapped from history. If Jonah and Katherine wish on coming back to the 21st century with their friends they are going to have to fill the gap the kidnappers created. However, the dilemma is how are they going to fix history if they were bound to be murdered? Read the book to find out. This book was fantastic because the author described the 15th century in such descriptive language you feel like you are there. It’s also exceedingly easy to connect to the characters due to their teenage personalities. The descriptions of these characters honestly remind me of some people I know. The plot itself may seem far-fetched but once you read the book it won’t seem so much like an impossible fantasy. In addition, one trait the author has is leaving a cliffhanger at the end of every chapter so you can’t put it down. Overall, I thought this was an exceptional read, however, I cannot speak for yourself so read to find out.

  59. Have you ever felt depressed? That’s how the main character in The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger feels all the time. This book is about Holden Caulfield, a 16 year old who always has a negative attitude. He always finds off-putting qualities in pretty much everything, including his school Pencey Prep. Holden didn’t enjoy it at Pencey, so he didn’t try. But because of his failing grades in four classes, Pencey became the third school that Holden got kicked out of. Holden was supposed to return home to New York City on Wednesday, but when he got into a fight with his roommate, he ran away. Holden went back to New York, but realized that he didn’t want to go home yet and face his parents, who would be furious. So he decided that he would wait until Wednesday to return home, in the meantime he would explore the city. This book is about all the events that happen and the people he encounter in just three days. So if you like books that are funny, sad, and everything in between, then maybe you should pick up The Catcher in the Rye.

  60. Do you think non-fiction books are boring? Well, I did before I read Chasing Lincoln's Killer by James L. Swanson. This thrilling novel tells the whole story of the murder of Abraham Lincoln and the hunt for John wilkes Booth the murderer. The author shows you about how John Wilkes Booth is feeling after his cause (the confederacy) is lost. He had devised a really bad plan to kidnap President Abraham Lincoln before with his band of confederates loyal to him. He absolutely dispises Lincoln and plans this triple murder. After he does his part and kills the president, he rides out of Washington and into Maryland. He meets up with a fellow conspirator, David Herold, and they travel south together from safe house to safe house. How far will they be able to go before getting caught or will they escape? If you read this exciting novel you will find out that and so much more.

  62. i would not recomend the fiction novel Grimm Tuesday by Garth NiX. I say this because this book is a times extremley hard to follow and confusing. The parts that you can understand are very boring and over descriptive. I thought that there were way to many minor characters that did not add anything to plot, just made it more confusing.
The plot of the story is also very simple a boy from earth named Arthur Pellingham is sent into another realm not at all like earth to recover stolen property from his arch nemisis Grimm Tuesday, and his minions.very few twists and unexpected events occur that would make the story interesting.
once again i would not reccomend the book Grimm Tuesday by Garth Nix to anyone who likes to read good books.

  63. Imagine that your best friend doesn’t return home in time for college and your world starts shifting! Are you looking for a great mystery? Do you desire to shift away from contemplating the cold weather and take a virtual bike ride across the country instead? If you do, you must check out the book Shift by Jennifer Bradbury because I highly recommend it. In this book, Christopher (Chris) and Winston (Win) embark on a cross country bicycle trip the summer before college starts. They plan to ride from West Virginia to Seattle, Washington. Along the way, they have many adventures and meet many people. Surprisingly, just before they reach the coast, Win disappears when Chris gets a flat tire. After he completes his journey, Chris takes the bus home, assuming that Win does the same. Chris finds out that he didn’t return for his orientation at Dartmouth University, when Win’s dad sends an investigator named Abe Ward to investigate Chris. Many assume that Win is dead and there are some suspicions that Chris murdered Win. Therefore, Chris decides to look for Win using clues about where he might be.
Did Chris find Win? You’ll have to read the book to find out on your own. However, I can tell you that Chris did learn many life lessons on his search to find Win. This book is mainly for middle or high school aged kids, and for both girls and boys. The author organized the chapters and timeline in a unique way, which smoothes out the flow of the events. Shift is all about friendship, loyalty, acceptance, and adventure. For those of you who are looking for a book that you know you’ll love, you must read Shift now!

  65. The book I read was Shiver by Maggie Steifvater. Shiver is an interesting tale of romance, mystery and suspense made for young adult readers. I rate this book a four out of four stars.
Grace watches her wolf for six years. Her wolf watches back with piercing yellow eyes. As soon as she knows it, “her wolf” is now a human in her arms with the same yellow eyes that melted her heart the first time she saw them. But they do not have much time left together both as humans. Her wolf, Sam, is a human ready to explode out of his skin into a yellow-eyed werewolf with the cold temperatures the Fall and Winter is bringing. While fighting to keep Sam human, Grace and he get hit by difficult obstacles that take love, hope, and courage to hold on to the slippery ice of reality.
Will Sam’s humanity last during the freezing Minnesota Winter? Will Grace and Sam be together forever as humans? I found this book to be riveting and I believe other readers will find this romance story to be as delicious as peppermint hot chocolate on a snowy Winter evening.

  67. No one likes bulies but if Dana the bullie in the book Hoot had not been pushing Roy's head in to the bus window he would have never seen the boy without shoes running away from the bus. He also would have never met Betrice and saved burrowing owls from the pancake house company. Hoot is a really good book and i would definltly recomand it.

  68. The novel I read was Boot by Daniel Da Cruz. The book was about a fictional group of people who went to Parris Island to become Marines. All of these men were placed into a platoon, platoon 1036. You follow platoon 1036 through all of their training from arriving at Parris island to graduation day.
In Boot you see marine training from the perspective of the recruits. The main character is Scott Lundstrom who goes from being a punk to being a well disciplined person. You see the change through letters he writes. I would recommend this book to people who like war stories because this novel shows the training involved.
